For the people around you
Someone you talk with uses Ashley. Here's what that means for you.
What Ashley is
Ashley is an app for iPhone and Apple Watch. When they switch listening on, it turns the conversations they're part of into text and short summaries, so they can look back at what was said and agreed.
How to tell when it's on
Ashley only listens when it's switched on. The orange microphone light shows on their Watch or iPhone the whole time it's on. There's no hidden mode.
What it keeps
- The audio and a written transcript of the conversation.
- A short summary of the conversation.
- If they've turned on voice recognition, a voiceprint for each voice, so the app can tell speakers apart. Your name is only attached if the person using Ashley adds it. Voiceprints are never used to identify you outside their account.
All of this is encrypted, stored and processed in the United States, and kept until the person using Ashley deletes it or their account. We never sell it, never use it for advertising, and don't use it to train AI.
If you'd rather not be in it
- Just ask them. They can switch listening off with one tap, or delete any conversation you were in. Deleting it removes the audio, transcript, summary and voiceprints from our server.
- Or contact us directly. You can write to our Privacy Officer at [email protected] at any time. We'll answer you under New Zealand's Privacy Act 2020.
- If you're not happy with our answer, you can complain to New Zealand's Office of the Privacy Commissioner (privacy.org.nz).
Children and classrooms
Ashley is for people aged 16 and over. If children are around, for example at home or in a classroom, the person using Ashley should check with a parent, guardian or the school before listening. Parents and teachers can ask for a conversation to be deleted in the same way as anyone else.
